The Irish government has announced a temporary cut to fuel excise duties to ease pressure from a recent spike in pump prices linked to conflict in the Middle East.

From midnight on Wednesday until the end of May, excise on diesel will be lowered by 20 cent per litre and petrol by 15 cent per litre.

Cabinet will consider the measures on Tuesday after they were agreed at a leaders' meeting earlier this week. Officials also plan a diesel rebate scheme for hauliers and bus operators, with payments to be backdated.

A separate excise reduction will apply to agricultural and green diesel, targeting sectors that rely heavily on these fuels.

The broader support package includes targeted energy payments for pensioners, carers and people with disabilities, bringing the total estimated cost to €235 million. The move follows sharp increases at the pumps: diesel rose from around €1.80 per litre to roughly €2.20–€2.30 over the weekend, while petrol climbed to about €2 per litre.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed news that planned strikes on Iranian power plants were postponed after what were described as productive talks, a development that briefly pushed crude oil prices lower.

He declined to say whether the changed market outlook would alter the government’s support measures.
