More than 400 drones strike western Ukraine, damaging UNESCO site and killing civilians

Russian forces launched an unprecedented daytime drone assault across western Ukraine on Tuesday, hitting multiple cities and damaging a historic monument.

Local officials in Lviv said the 16th-century Bernardine monastery, a UNESCO-listed landmark, sustained damage.

Video shared by authorities shows flames spreading through the roof of a nearby residential building. The drone wave also struck Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia and Ternopil.

In Ivano-Frankivsk regional head Svitlana Onyshchuk reported two people were killed and four injured, including a six-year-old, with several structures — including a maternity hospital — damaged.

Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovyi said 13 people were hurt in his city and warned that the toll could rise as assessments continue. The daytime barrage followed a heavy overnight attack that left at least five people dead.

Early on Tuesday a drone hit an electric train near Kharkiv, killing a 61-year-old woman, and additional fatalities were reported in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Poltava.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said the assault involved a ‘‘large number’’ of drones entering from the north and advancing in column-like groups. He added the strikes covered a wider geographic area than typical nighttime raids and represented one of the largest attacks in a 24-hour period.

While the conflict has reached most parts of Ukraine, the country’s west has generally seen fewer strikes than regions closer to the Russian border.

Tuesday’s wave shows that even those areas remain at risk as the war continues.
