When Frances Tophill told colleagues she might end up living in a van after losing out on house bids, veteran gardener Alan Titchmarsh admits he was alarmed.
The Love Your Garden star eventually secured a home in Devon, but she hasn’t ditched the van she once joked she could live in.
Tophill, 34, from Kent, shot to fame after joining ITV’s Love Your Garden with Titchmarsh, Katie Rushworth and David Domoney.
She had no previous TV experience but quickly became a familiar face to viewers and a respected voice in the gardening world.
Her route into horticulture wasn’t glamorous: early jobs included working in retail and taking an apprentice role for modest pay.
That apprenticeship led to projects such as renovating the garden at The Salutation, owned by Gogglebox’s Dom and Steph, and it helped steer her toward a broadcasting career.
A chance email while she was at university led to an audition in London and a spot on Love Your Garden.
From there she built a profile that includes five gardening books, notably The Modern Gardener, which explores environmental themes.
Tophill has been open about living with dyslexia, yet she has not let it hold back her writing or her public work.
Outside TV she keeps busy as Head Gardener at The Sharpham Trust, where she works full time.
Despite buying a house, she kept the van for filming travel and short stays while working around the country.
Titchmarsh’s initial concern was eased when she finally picked up the keys to her Devon property, but the van remains part of her life on the road.
She keeps her personal life largely private, though she is known to be a devoted aunt.
For gardening fans, Frances Tophill has become a trusted, down-to-earth presence who combines practical know-how with environmental passion.
