Ireland to cut petrol and diesel excise duty until end of May
RSS News

The Irish government will temporarily reduce excise duty on fuel to ease pressure from recent price spikes.

From midnight on Wednesday until the end of May, diesel duty will be cut by €0.20 per litre and petrol by €0.15 per litre.

Cabinet approval is expected after leaders agreed the measure on Monday. Officials also plan a backdated rebate for haulage companies and bus operators to help businesses facing higher diesel bills.

There will be a specific excise cut for agricultural and green diesel as well.

The wider relief package includes targeted energy support payments for pensioners, carers and people with disabilities. The total cost of the measures is estimated at €235 million.

Officials say the step responds to volatile markets driven by tensions in the Middle East that pushed crude and pump prices higher.

Fuel prices had surged in recent days, with diesel climbing from about €1.80 to roughly €2.20–€2.30 per litre and petrol rising toward €2. Border shoppers should note that fuel in Northern Ireland has generally been cheaper than the Republic by nearly 30 pence per litre, so cross-border buying is likely to remain attractive even after the temporary cuts.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed an announcement that planned strikes on Iranian power plants had been delayed, a development that briefly eased oil prices.

He declined to say whether that change in market conditions would alter the government's planned supports.
