A Miami mother who tried to arrange the killing of her three-year-old son was sentenced without immediate jail time after pleading guilty to charges linked to the plot.
Twenty-year-old Jazmin Paez contacted a website that presents itself as a hitman-for-hire and supplied photos and a precise location for the child, prompting the site operator to alert law enforcement.
The site, which is intended as a parody, has in practice become a tool for identifying real threats when its owner forwards suspicious requests to police.
Authorities arrested Paez in July 2023 after receiving the tip.
Paez admitted to solicitation of first-degree murder, unlawful use of a communications device, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
She had faced the possibility of decades behind bars.
Under a plea agreement, she avoided immediate incarceration.
Her sentence was suspended and she must complete two years of community service, serve 12 years on probation, and undergo court-ordered behavioral therapy until officials determine it is no longer necessary.
She is also prohibited from contacting the child until 2040.
Court records show Paez has already lost her parental rights.
Prosecutors took into account a reported diagnosis of schizophrenia during the proceedings.
The assistant state attorney handling the case said Paez was not prepared for parenting and noted she had begun a relationship with a teenager in 2023 that ended after she revealed she had a child.
Prosecutors suggested that breakup may have prompted her to pursue the plot.
The case drew attention for raising difficult questions about how the justice system balances public safety, child welfare, and the needs of people with serious mental illness.
The website owner’s decision to forward the request ultimately led to the investigation and arrest.
