Jannik Sinner extended a remarkable run at ATP Masters 1000 events, breaking Novak Djokovic's decade-old mark for consecutive sets won with a convincing victory at the Miami Open.
The Italian, ranked world number two and just 24 years old, closed out Corentin Moutet 6-1 6-4 in 71 minutes to register his 25th and 26th straight sets at the Masters 1000 level, moving past Djokovic’s previous streak of 24.
Sinner had matched that landmark in his opening match against Damir Dzumhur.
Sinner was dominant from the outset, taking 19 of the first 26 points and wrapping up the opening set in just 22 minutes.
He secured a break in the fifth game of the second set and then served out the match comfortably.
After the win he said he was pleased with the performance and stressed the importance of staying focused, noting that he will take each match as it comes as the tournament progresses.
The victory continues a run of form that has seen Sinner claim back-to-back Masters titles: he won Indian Wells earlier this month and lifted the Paris trophy in November — both without dropping a set.
He now aims to complete the rare ‘Sunshine Double’ by adding Miami to his Indian Wells triumph, a feat last achieved by Roger Federer in 2017.
Sinner will face American Alex Michelsen in the round of 16 as he chases further progress in Miami.
Elsewhere, former world number one Daniil Medvedev was upset by Francisco Cerundolo in a 6-0 4-6 7-5 match.
The contest featured an unusual moment when umpire Mohamed Lahyani’s elevated chair became briefly caught in the spider cam rigging; Lahyani climbed down while officials checked the equipment.
Cerundolo described the win as hard-fought and said it was his first meeting with Medvedev, praising the Russian’s strong season so far.
As the Miami Open moves into the business end, Sinner’s streak and Medvedev’s early exit are among the standout storylines to watch.
