Massive Russian bombardment kills at least five as strikes hit 11 regions of Ukraine

A huge overnight attack by Russian forces has left at least five people dead and caused damage across 11 regions of Ukraine.

Authorities said a drone strike on an electric train in Kharkiv killed a 61-year-old woman.

Other fatalities were reported in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and the Poltava region, where residential buildings and a hotel were hit. Zaporizhzhia was severely affected, with six drones followed by six ballistic missiles striking the city.

Local officials said one person died and nine were wounded after a high-rise apartment block was hit.

Poltava regional authorities reported at least two deaths and a dozen injured after strikes on homes and a hotel. In Kherson, local commanders said a civilian died when his house came under shelling.

Ukraine’s Air Force said the assault involved dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones: seven ballistic missiles, 23 cruise missiles, four air-launched guided weapons and 392 unmanned aerial vehicles.

Air defences intercepted most of the incoming weapons, shooting down 25 missiles and 365 drones, the service added. President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned the country to expect a large-scale attack and said the operation underlined the urgent need for stronger protection to save lives.

Officials noted these heavy bombardments have been occurring roughly every week to ten days in recent months.

The strikes also damaged energy infrastructure in the Odesa region, cutting the Isaccea–Vulcanesti power line that Moldova uses to import electricity from Romania. Moldova’s president, Maia Sandu, warned the situation was fragile and blamed Russia for undermining regional energy security.

Moscow’s defence ministry said its forces intercepted dozens of Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight.

Meanwhile, Kyiv says Russia’s ground offensive in the east has slowed, even as artillery and missile attacks continue. The strike came amid wider geopolitical tensions and concern that attention and air-defence resources are being strained by conflicts elsewhere.

Ukrainian and US officials have been holding talks on how to press for an end to the war, while Kyiv urges continued international support to bolster its air defences and protect civilians.
