Turkish authorities have detained 162 people in response to online content posted after two separate school shootings that killed and injured pupils this week.
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said officials moved against accounts that circulated footage of the incidents, shared material likely to create panic, praised the perpetrators, or spread misleading information aimed at undermining official statements.
The first attack happened on Tuesday in Siverek district at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School.
An ex-student in his late teens reportedly fired a shotgun and wounded 16 people before taking his own life, local officials said.
The second shooting occurred the following day at Ayser Calik Secondary School in Kahramanmaras, where eight students and one teacher were killed and 13 others suffered injuries, six of them critically.
A 14-year-old attacker was also killed during that incident.
Investigators said the Kahramanmaras suspect had planned the assault in advance.
A document dated April 11, 2026, was found on his computer, and police noted a reference to US mass killer Elliot Rodger on the suspect’s messaging profile.
Turkish media reported the attacker entered two classrooms carrying several firearms and multiple magazines.
Officials have described the suspect as likely a student.
Gürlek said 95 people were initially detained for sharing banned footage, praising crime, or spreading fear and falsehoods.
A further 67 people were held over posts suggesting attacks might be staged at other schools, bringing the total to 162.
Authorities have also restricted access to 1,104 social media accounts as part of the probe.
The arrests and account measures form part of a wider effort to control the spread of violent or incendiary material online.
Funerals for the victims have drawn large crowds in Kahramanmaras, with relatives naming some of the children, including 10-year-olds Zeynep and Shura.
Several government ministers are expected to attend the services as the country reels from the twin tragedies.
