Richard Osman surprised his then-girlfriend Ingrid Oliver by revealing he had never watched a number of famous films, a confession that left her visibly taken aback.

Osman, best known for his TV work from writing days on shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway? to presenting Pointless and Richard Osman’s House of Games, met actor-comedian Ingrid while she appeared on his quiz show. On the podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, Osman recalled how, early in their relationship, he casually admitted he hadn’t seen films that many assume everyone knows.

Ingrid’s reaction reflected genuine astonishment and amusement at his omissions.

He singled out titles such as The Sound of Music, Top Gun, West Side Story and Mary Poppins, and later admitted he’d caught up with some of them. He joked that Top Gun became an urgent viewing choice and that one of their early dates involved seeing it at a drive-in.

Osman also explained he largely avoids classic Disney movies, although he did watch Pixar hits like Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.

while his children were young — those appealed to him more than the traditional Disney catalogue. On TV, he’d resisted starting The Sopranos because he wanted someone to share the experience with.

Ingrid had the same idea, so they agreed to hold off until they were ready to watch it together — and are now working their way through the series.

The stories offered a light-hearted glimpse into how two pop-culture tastes collided and helped shape the early days of their relationship.
