Easter travel warning after rise in chikungunya cases and sustained malaria levels
RSS News

UK health authorities have issued a travel alert ahead of the Easter and spring holiday period, urging travellers to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses.

Although dengue infections have eased, health officials say chikungunya cases among people returning to the UK have reached their highest level in more than a decade, and malaria remains common in travellers.

Chikungunya typically begins with a sudden fever and intense joint pain. Most recover within a couple of weeks, but persistent joint aches can continue for months or even years in some people.

Very young children, older adults and those with other medical conditions are at higher risk of severe outcomes.

In 2025, England and Wales reported 160 chikungunya infections — the largest annual total since 2014. All cases were travel-related, with most linked to visits to Sri Lanka (75 cases), India (17) and Bangladesh (16).

Malaria also continues to be a concern for returning travellers.

The UK recorded 1,629 malaria cases in 2025, down from 1,812 the previous year, but still at a substantial level. Public health experts advise taking simple, effective steps to reduce the chance of mosquito bites while abroad.

Recommended measures include using repellents containing DEET, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets when appropriate.

Travellers should check the latest destination guidance on the TravelHealthPro website before departure. Where chikungunya is a known risk, visiting a travel health clinic to discuss vaccination options may be worthwhile.

With many people planning trips over the coming weeks, officials stress that basic precautions can significantly cut the risk of picking up a serious mosquito-borne infection and help ensure a safer holiday.
