Broccoli will never be the same once with this essential tip

Culinary experts have shared a simple step to add to the cooking process to make your broccoli and other vegetables taste out of this world. Experts from Delish explained that if you’re bored with your regular boiled veggies, switch to sauteing them.

Sauteing uses a small amount of oil or fat to cook protein or veggies in a shallow pan over a relatively high heat. It’s a dry-heat cooking method where the food is quickly heated in a hot pan, helping to brown the surface of the veggies and deepen their flavour. However, the culinary experts at Delish claimed in a TikTok you can take your vegetables to the next level when cooking them in the pan.

How to cook broccoli

Before adding in your vegetables, you’ll need to heat a shallow pan on a high heat. A small amount of oil or fat will be needed.

The expert said: "While your veggies are sauteing, it helps them to cook quickly and evenly and you can still get those crispy bits at the end of it."

To achieve this, place your chosen vegetables into the hot pan, and toss them until you start to see some of those crispy brown bits forming.

Delish continued: "Here’s the fun part. Add about a tablespoon of water to your pan, then cover the pan straight away.

"The steam is going to cook those veggies through very quickly, getting them tender. And you can test if they’re just tender with a fork.

“Now we’re gonna add just a little bit more oil, not too much, at the end, and help them crisp up… Look at this perfectly tender, not mushy, perfectly browned broccoli.”

The technique is not too dissimilar from reverse sauteing, where water or broth is added to the pan to help steam the veggies while sauteing. As the water turns to steam, it gently cooks the vegetables, locking in moisture and flavour.

When the lid is removed from the pan, the excess moisture begins to evaporate. The vegetables will then be able to sizzle and char in the pan.
