Ilya Kharun swims to new Canadian record in win at Tyr Pro Meet




Ilya Kharun set a new Canadian record on the way to a victory in the men's 50m butterfly final on Friday at the Tyr Pro Meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The Montreal swimmer, 19, touched the wall in 23.09 seconds to score the win and eclipse the previous Canadian record of 23.25 held by Finlay Knox since early 2024.

Kharun's time on Friday was also a Pro Series Swim record, breaking the 23.11 mark set by Matt Targett in 2012.

Kharun won Olympic bronze medals at Paris 2024 in the 100m and 200m butterfly.

McIntosh nears personal best

Fellow Canadian Summer McIntosh nearly matched her personal best time in the women's 200m backstroke final. The Toronto swimmer finished in second place, touching the wall in 2:06.82. That's just 0.01 back of her best mark, set in 2023.

McIntosh was just 0.50 behind the winner, Regan Smith. The American is the world-record holder in the 100m backstroke.

The Toronto native and three-time Olympic champion will leave her Sarasota, Fla., training base following this summer's world championship. Among her future options could be joining American coach Bob Bowman, former coach of Michael Phelps, in Texas.

Saturday is the final day of action at the meet, where McIntosh is scheduled to swim in the 200m breaststroke and the 100m butterfly..

In other Canadian results from Fort Lauderdale on Friday, Shona Branton (Port Lambton, Ont.) and Sophie Angus (Weston, Conn.) finished sixth and eighth in the women's 50m breaststroke, respectively. Toronto's Penny Oleksiak was sixth in the women's 50m butterlfy final.
