A major cafe chain has closed its site at a popular shopping centre without warning. Shoppers have been left stunned by the sudden move and say there has been no official explanation from the chain on the closure.

The Pret A Manger cafe at Gunwharf Quays, in Portsmouth, is now officially shut after years of business. It was the only Pret in the city and loyal customers have been caught by surprise. Gunwharf Quays is home to over 90 outlet stores and attracts millions of visitors every year.

A spokesperson for the shopping centre said: "We’re making significant investments in Gunwharf Quays to create a vibrant, all-day destination where guests can enjoy a memorable experience from the moment they arrive, to when they leave every time they visit.

"We are sorry to see it close." It is yet to be confirmed what will replace the empty site.

The closure comes as Pret continues to make changes to its business. Their popular subscription, which once offered five free drinks a day for £30, has recently been overhauled.

The fee has been dropped to £10 but members now get 50% off five drinks a day instead. Pret A Manger managing director Clare Clough said in a letter to customers: "With Club Pret subscription, our coffees, teas, coolers and iced drinks will continue to be the best offer on the high street."

However, customers have been left angry by the cutbacks. Some have threatened to cancel their subscription following the news.

One said on X: "Have a word I will be cancelling as I think many others will be!!! Shame on you."

Another added: "Pret changing their subscription to 50 per cent off five drinks instead of it being free… that just ruined my day."
