How to remove shower head limescale 'for good' with kitchen cupboard item

Limescale buildup tends to appear on shower heads after some time and it becomes increasingly tough to remove the more the task is put off. This common issue can make your bathroom fixtures look dirty no matter how much you clean them, as well as impair the performance of your shower. But instead of reaching for expensive cleaning products or harsh chemicals, there’s a simple solution found right in your kitchen cupboard.

Martyn Brown, a technical expert at Triton Showers, shares the one ingredient that will help keep your shower head sparkling clean without the need for vinegar. He said: “There is no need for pricey cleaning products or harsh chemicals – this simple trick removes surface buildup without damaging the finish of your shower head.”

According to the specialist, all it takes is some warm water, a teaspoon of washing up liquid, or even a lathered-up bar of soap to tackle the issue.

Simply submerge your shower head in the soapy water for a few minutes and gently wipe away the grime with a soft cloth.

This trick removes surface buildup effectively without damaging the shiny finish of your shower head.

Martyn also advised against using abrasive sponges or strong chemicals, which can wear down the surface and even void your shower’s guarantee.

Of course, prevention is just as important as cleaning. Martyn suggested drying your shower head and fittings after each use.

“One of the easiest ways to prevent limescale from forming in the first place is by drying your shower head and fittings after each use,” he explained.

“A quick wipe with a soft cloth will prevent watermarks and limescale settling in – preventing the problem before it even becomes one!”

For those in hard water areas, Martyn recommends cleaning your shower head more frequently.

He said: “If you live in hard water areas such as the South East, London, the Midlands or the East of England, you may notice that limescale develops quickly.

“Signs include chalky, white residue on taps and shower heads, difficulty getting soap to lather and spots on glassware after washing.

“In these locations, a weekly shower head clean will help maintain performance; regular maintenance goes a long way in ensuring your shower is working at its best.”
