When to water hydrangeas

David advised that one of the key actions gardeners should take is to water their hydrangeas at two critical times of the day.

"Water before 9am or after 7pm. Midday sun evaporates water quickly and can even scorch foliage," he said. "Morning watering is ideal. It gives the soil time to absorb the moisture before heat sets in."

When temperatures soar, it's crucial for gardeners to dedicate a mere five minutes to this task.

How to water hydrangeas

In addition to timing, the method of watering is also key. Gardeners should aim to water their hydrangeas "deeply and slowly".

The florist explained: "Surface watering doesn't cut it. Focus on slow, deep watering at the base of plants. For containers, make sure water reaches the roots by soaking the soil thoroughly."

This could mean relocating potted plants to shaded areas like patios, beneath trees, or behind taller vegetation, or employing garden fleece, parasols, or even an old sheet to protect the delicate blooms throughout the day.
