Following the billion-dollar success of The Super Mario Bros Movie, Nintendo announced a film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

The upcoming movie will be based on the hugely popular high fantasy video games set in the Kingdom of Hyrule.

Each adventure sees players embody a young elf-like character called Link, who embarks on a quest to save Princess Zelda and her domain from the villainous Ganondorf.

The Sony Pictures film will be live-action, and director Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) promises it will be more Studio Ghibli than Lord of the Rings, full of wonder and whimsy.

And now, Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has announced the two actors who will play Link and Princess Zelda in the new movie.

Posting on the official Nintendo X account this morning, he wrote: “This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”

Bragason is a 21-year-old Brit best known for her roles in the TV shows Three Girls, The Jetty, and Renegade Nell. Meanwhile, fellow English actor Ainsworth is just 16 and voiced Pinocchio in Disney’s live-action remake. He has also appeared in Netflix’s The Sandman, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Flora & Ulysses.

The Legend of Zelda film hits cinemas on May 7, 2027.
