Weeding can be a particularly tedious and physically demanding aspect of gardening. The constant bending, crouching and pulling can lead to back ache, knee pain and wrist discomfort, especially for older gardeners. And if the entire root system isn't removed, weeds often regrow within a matter of days.

Chemical weed killers are not ideal, as they can be expensive and harmful to the environment. But you don't have to resort to hand pulling, which is often touted as the "only way" to banish garden weeds naturally. Gardening experts note that there's an effective and eco-friendly alternative that you probably already have in your kitchen. When used correctly, it promises to keep weeds out of your garden for good.

Due to its natural acidity, lemon juice can be a potent weed killer that doesn't require harsh chemicals or repetitive physical labour. When applied directly, it dehydrates the weeds, causing them to wither, making it an excellent choice for patios, paths, and gravel areas.

Gardeners' World.com has provided two recipes for homemade weed killers: one using lemon juice and the other salt. While these homemade concoctions might not work as quickly as their chemical equivalents, they are far better for both your garden and the environment.

Lemon Juice

To make your own, you'll need the juice of five lemons. If this seems too laborious, you can use bottled lemon juice instead. Simply pour the juice into a spray bottle and aim at your weeds. Make sure to apply it on a dry day, as rain could wash it away.

Salt

Gardeners' World has recommended a precise approach to weed control. They suggest that gardeners focus on unwanted plants on hard surfaces to avoid harming fertile soil.

The recipe is straightforward: combine one part table salt with two or three parts water, and they say make sure to use common table salt rather than rock, sea or Epsom salts.

Described as "cheap and easy" by the gardening experts, this salt mixture promises to effectively eliminate weeds permanently.
