Nottingham Forest have reportedly accused Tottenham of an 'illegal approach' in a chaotic twist to Morgan Gibbs-White's future. It had been claimed that Spurs had triggered a £60million release clause in the England midfielder's contract and had planned his medical for today.

But the deal could now be ditched with wide-ranging reports claiming that Forest are now considering legal action over what they believe is an 'illegal' approach for their player. The Midlands club are said to have been unaware about an approach for their key man. A complaint to the Premier League is reportedly being prepared, while Spurs have been left in the dark over Forest's stance.

According to Sky Sports, Gibbs-White's move to Spurs is therefore considered off at this stage. However, there is a chance it could later be revived depending on the outcome of any potential complaint Forest pursue.

Spurs are understood to have triggered the 25-year-old's release clause. A medical and the completion of the deal were scheduled for today, with the North Londoners believing they were close to finalising a move for the exciting playmaker.

Gibbs-White was key to Forest's over-performance last term, with Nuno's side eventually finishing seventh. In the first half of the season, they had challenged Liverpool at the top of the Premier League and looked certain to qualify for the Champions League before an unfortunate dip in form.

Forest are also anticipated to lose influential winger Anthony Elanga over the coming days. The Sweden international is joining Newcastle in a £55m deal. That move has not yet been formally announced, although leaked images circulated online show the former Manchester United man in a Newcastle shirt.
