Dearnie Jones was part of a gang chasing the victim's son in an attempt to snatch his electric bike.

The father, in his 40s, rushed to the scene after receiving a panicked call from his son around 6.30pm, with his other children in tow.

Upon arrival, they were confronted by the masked 19 year old Jones, brandishing a large knife and menacing several bystanders.

In a terrifying turn of events, Jones cornered the concerned dad and plunged the knife into his stomach.

Despite his severe injury, the brave father managed to drive himself to a supermarket car park for help.

Following emergency surgery, he spent a week in a coma but miraculously pulled through, as per NeedToKnow reports.

The harrowing incident unfolded in Mapperley, Notts, back in October 2024.

After a widespread manhunt, detectives tracked down Jones, hailing from Ruddington Lane, Nottingham, and apprehended him.

He faced justice in court, being found guilty of wounding with intent and carrying a knife in public.

Jones has now received a nine-year sentence to be served at a young offender institution, handed down by Nottingham Crown Court.

Notts Police Detective Constable Charlotte Webster commented: "What happened that evening is yet another example of how the presence of a knife can instantly lead to an escalation of any incident.

"Despite the presence of a number of onlookers, including children, Jones brandished a knife, cornered the victim next to a fence and stabbed him.

"His actions inflicted serious injuries and the outcome could have been even more grave without the efforts of emergency responders and hospital staff.

"Jones could quite easily have been in court today to be sentenced for killing a man.

"A team of detectives and other officers worked hard on this investigation to understand what happened, track down Jones, arrest him and build the case against him.

"I'm grateful to all the people who gave their accounts of the incident and particularly to the victim.

"His help proved vital in achieving this outcome at court.

"We continue our work as a force, alongside partners, to educate people about making the right decisions and to never leave their home with a knife."
