Prime Video has just launched a new original film that's an absolute must-see for fans of action-packed cinema.

The streaming giant's latest blockbuster was released today (Wednesday, 2nd July) and it's already garnering high praise from critics who are hailing it as the first guilty pleasure of 2025.

Featuring John Cena and Idris Elba, who are reuniting after their impressive performance in The Suicide Squad, Heads of State is the film to watch this week for those seeking an adrenaline rush.

The plot revolves around a failed mission in Spain, led by Priyanka Chopra Jonas' MI6 agent Noel Bisset. This leads to the Prime Minister of Great Britain Sam Clarke (played by Elba) and the President of the United States, Will Derringer (Cena), being forced into hiding together when they become the targets of a global conspiracy threatening to destabilise the world.

Clarke, a former SAS commando, and Derringer, an actor-turned-politician known for his popular action franchise Water Cobra, have to put their past differences aside to survive a thrilling race back to London to prevent NATO's impending collapse, reports the Mirror US.

Packed with edge-of-your-seat set pieces and plenty of humour, Heads of State is a high-speed thriller that will leave you eagerly anticipating a sequel.

Collider's review praised the film as "stupid in all the right ways" in their positive assessment of the new Prime Video offering.

"Right from the jump, Heads of State knows exactly the kind of movie that it wants to be, and leans into all the goofiness and stupidity that comes across as endearing rather than lazy," they added.

"It's unapologetic, silly, and self-aware, while still having flashy action scenes that look surprisingly great.

"It's the perfect movie to watch for the 4th of July once you get back from watching the fireworks."

Empire agreed with the assessment, saying: "A really good, dumb comedy can be a joyous thing, and this is a really good, dumb comedy."

They added: "[Director Ilya Naishuller] piles up touches of goofiness bit by bit, like a game of Buckaroo!, careful never to do too much too quickly and send the whole thing skittering.

"By the time it reaches its highly improbable conclusion, you could reasonably be rolling your eyes at how mad it all is, but you'll probably be having such a blast that you won't feel any need to."

And FandomWire also noted how the film is perfect to watch this 4th of July weekend, saying: "John Cena and Idris Elba are a dynamic pairing that will have you laughing from the first interaction.

"Every movie doesn't need to be taken seriously, so I ask you to do the same with this.

"Just turn it on, turn off your brain, and don't overthink it, and enjoy the ride. You'll thank me after the movie is over."

Get ready for a patriotic thrill ride this weekend with Prime Video's latest original.

Heads of State is available to stream on Prime Video.
