Readers have been voting for the book they deem to be the greatest of all time. It will come as no surprise to learn that Jane Austen has come out on top with her beloved novel, Pride and Prejudice. The novel was originally published in 1813, more than 200 years ago. Since then, the book has seen many TV and film adaptations as well as a reworked novel.

Goodreads' fans have voted for the book to come out on top, deeming it "timeless" and "enchanting".

The books synopsis reads: "Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, follows the story of the Bennet sisters in 19th-century England, focusing on the relationship between the intelligent and independent Elizabeth Bennet and the wealthy, proud Mr. Darcy. The novel explores themes of love, social class, and reputation, as Elizabeth and Darcy must overcome their initial prejudices and pride to find happiness together."

The book has a rating of 4.29 out of five stars with more than 4 million reviews.

One reviewer said: "Some of my happiest, and most looked-forward-to days of the year are the ones that I reserve for the re-reading of Pride and Prejudice."

"Perfection in a book!!! One of the best stories and most wonderfully written books of all time. My favourite Jane Austen book because of this magnificent character sketch of pride and prejudice, it’s weighty themes and witty dialogue," another added.

Fans also rave about the many film and TV adaptations thathave transpired throughout the years, with screenwriter Andrew Davies' 1995 series being loved deeply by fans – partly due to Colin Firth's performance, who emerged wet-shirted from a lake.

The book has received much praise throughout the centuries, most notably in its 200th anniversary year where many publications celebrated the title.

Pride and Prejudice is available to purchase as most book shops and online.
