Lando Norris held off team-mate Oscar Piastri to win the Austrian Grand Prix, cutting down the championship leader's advantage in Red Bull's backyard. While McLaren shined, there were a number of days to forget further down the field with Max Verstappen, Kimi Antonelli and Carlos Sainz all failing to finish.

After Sainz’s stalled Williams triggered a 10-minute delay to the race start, the grid embarked on a chaotic opening lap. Piastri swooped around the outside of Charles Leclerc to snatch P2, while Antonelli locked his rear tyres at Turn Three, crashing hard into the right side of Verstappen’s car.

With the reigning world champion ruled out, Norris and Piastri were free to do battle at the front of the field, safe in the knowledge that their closest external title rival was out of the race. For 20 laps, the Australian hounded his team-mate, but the pole-sitter remained strong before the first round of pit stops.

When Piastri emerged from the pit lane a handful of laps after Norris, the gap had stretched to six seconds, giving the Brit some breathing room at the front. Further back, the chaos continued as Yuki Tsunoda and Franco Colapinto collided at Turn Four, giving both cars damage.

For the second half of the race, the gap looked to have stabilised at just over three seconds, and Piastri had a heart-in-mouth moment when he was shoved onto the grass by Colapinto. However, he steadied himself and set off after Norris, reducing the deficit to under two seconds.
