With summer temperatures set to soar and hosepipe bans looming, a leading gardening expert has revealed the key to keeping your lawn green, healthy, and hydrated, and it all comes down to timing.

Lucie Bradley, from Easy Garden Irrigation, has partnered with David Wilson Homes to share seasonal lawn care advice, including the best time of day to water your lawn. According to Lucie, the early morning between 6am and 10am is the optimal window. Watering during these cooler hours allows moisture to soak into the soil before it evaporates, helping grass stay hydrated throughout the day. It also gives the lawn enough time to dry before nightfall, reducing the risk of fungal disease.

With hosepipe bans expected in parts of the UK, Lucie recommends using grey water from showers, sinks or bathtubs, as long as it’s free from harsh chemicals.

Collecting rainwater in water butts is another sustainable and cost-effective way to keep your lawn nourished during dry spells.

Rather than bagging up grass cuttings, Lucie advises leaving them on the lawn after mowing. Known as mulching, this method helps retain moisture, reduces evaporation and naturally returns nutrients to the soil.

However, she strongly cautions against mowing during a heatwave, as high temperatures place grass under stress and can hinder its recovery.

Homeowners should wait for cooler weather and ensure the lawn has been watered or experienced rainfall at least 24 hours beforehand.

The advice is part of a broader seasonal lawn care guide released by David Wilson Homes, aimed at helping UK gardeners adapt their lawn maintenance routines year-round.

From scarifying in spring to clearing debris in winter, the guide offers practical, eco-conscious tips for every season.

As summers grow hotter and water becomes more precious, Lucie stresses the importance of sustainable lawn care, not only for aesthetics but for long-term garden health.
