Drivers have been urged to clean their windscreens or risk being hit with a £1,000 fine. The motoring experts at LeaseLoco.com have reminded drivers of the importance of having a clear field of vision while driving.

Over time, windscreens can become covered in bug splat from insects, dust, dirt, pollen, tree sap and bird droppings after a long journey. Experts are advising drivers to clean the windscreen of anything that could obstruct their view before setting off in their car in order to avoid breaking the Highway Code. This states that windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision. Motorists who do not have a full view of the road ahead can be issued with a fine of up to £1,000.

John Wilmot, CEO of car lease comparison site LeaseLoco.com, said: “For the most part, it’s nothing to worry about, but drivers should make sure their windscreens are clear enough for them to see and drive safely when they continue their journey or head home. A windscreen that is too dirty and obstructs your view of the road isn’t just unsafe, it can also land you a fine of up to £1,000.”

To effectively clean your windscreen, start by removing any loose debris with a brush or cloth. Then, spray a glass cleaner solution onto the windscreen and wipe it down with a clean microfibre cloth, using either circular or straight strokes.

Cleaning the outside first will enable you to see any smears on the inside. Clean the inside of your car's windshield, use a microfibre cloth and glass cleaner. You can also use a solution of rubbing alcohol and water for cleaning and degreasing.

John said: “If you don’t have access to any cleaning supplies, water and a cloth or an old shirt should do the trick, you may just have to put in a bit of elbow grease.

“For anything more stubborn you can use a plastic card to gently scrape the debris. This should be strong enough to help remove stains without scratching the glass. If you clean the stains early enough, they shouldn’t settle too badly though.

“By taking just a few minutes to clean your windscreen you’ll be keeping yourself and other road users safe and this simple step can make all the difference.”
