Netflix's latest offering, a gripping psychological thriller starring Taraji P. Henson, has left audiences reaching for the tissues.

Tyler Perry's Straw, which he wrote and directed, debuted on the platform on Friday (6th June), and has swiftly become a hot topic on social media.

The film centres around single mum Janiyah Wiltkinson, portrayed by Henson, as she battles to provide for her sick daughter, Aria (Gabrielle E Jackson). The narrative plunges viewers into a tumultuous day in Janiyah's life, before she reaches her breaking point.

Echoing themes from Perry's past work, Straw explores the systemic challenges faced by minorities, with Janiyah's experiences as a Black woman being integral to the story.

Despite Tyler Perry often receiving mixed reviews, particularly for his depiction of Black women, this film has resonated strongly with audiences.

Rotten Tomatoes users have given it a commendable 76 percent approval rating, with one viewer hailing it as "one of Tyler Perry's best works."

The movie's intense storyline has also deeply affected cinema fans.

"Wow it was heart-breaking, I was ugly crying," shared an X, formerly Twitter, user.

Echoing the sentiment, another viewer recommended: "Highly recommend Tyler Perry's Straw on Netflix! Absolutely heart-breaking and tense!"

The praise extended beyond X, with a Reddit user admitting: "I cried hard, The entire movie. I had to take a lil break. The movie was good and real."

Yet, not all feedback is glowing; Tyler Perry's new picture has taken knocks from some quarters. A disgruntled IMDb critic dismissed the film as "one of the top 5 worst movies ever."

This very reviewer expounded further: "The number of impossible moments that take place within timelines portrayed is truly staggering. Not sure how a movie [like this] makes it to a streaming platform. A real low for Tyler Perry."

Film enthusiasts can now see for themselves and pass judgement as the movie is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
