Baked beans are a classic breakfast staple, and many Britons will have tried and tested methods for preparing them. But while most may be happy with just adding a stick of butter or cheese and scoffing it down on a piece of toast, one foodie recommends a recipe with a surprising addition you may already have in your kitchen.

Food Blogger Whitney Bond shared tips for making her dad's "famous homemade baked beans" on her website, which combines cans of pork and beans, bacon, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, diced onion, and kosher salt. But it also includes the bold addition of some ground mustard to give the dish an extra kick.

All the ingredients are added together and cooked in either your oven, slow cooker, or smoker to produce a thick, tasty mixture

It's a great way of turning the staple into a proper meal all of its own while cooking up a storm during your next barbecue.

Whitney says when she's "hosting a party or BBQ, I toss them in the crock pot so that people can eat them throughout the party".

"If I’m outside smoking meats, I cook them in a cast iron dutch oven right on the smoker next to my meat," she adds.

Meanwhile, Stephanie Ganz, a professional food writer, shared on Simply Recipes that a different secret ingredient can give baked beans a "certain je ne sais quoi that makes them sing".

She believes Worcestershire sauce, which contains shallots, garlic, soy sauce, salt and vinegar, gives the beans more depth and layers of flavour, infusing them with umami notes of anchovy and tamarind.

Stephanie adds two cans of baked beans to a casserole dish as well as some onion, garlic, ketchup and brown sugar, black pepper and a tablespoon of the classic British sauce.
