Never store leftover wine in bottle as there's better place to keep it

If you've ever opened a bottle of wine only to have forgotten about it for a bit too long, you might have noticed that the flavour of the wine has changed.

Some wines should be aired before drinking, as exposing the drink to oxygen improves its flavour and aroma. The process, called aeration, softens tannins and can emulate the ageing. However, exposing the wines to air for too long may 'ruin' the flavours.

If you do find yourself not finishing an opened bottle of wine, most people will know you have to reseal it before putting it away to ensure it stays fresh.

One sommieler named Warner has now shared her go-to tips to properly store wine and avoid spoiling it, and it might not be what you'd expect.

"I know it sounds crazy, but if you ever have an instance where you have leftover wine, don’t put the cork back in the bottle. I have a way better tip that’s going to change your life," Warner said in her TikTok video.

She went on to explain: "If you were to put the cork back on a bottle of wine that’s half empty, you’ll see half of this still has oxygen inside of it, and corks are porous. This is still gonna allow oxygen to get into your wine - not great."

Warner then shared her go-to way of storing her leftover wine, saying: "What you really want to do is reduce the amount of oxygen to wine ratio. What I recommend is a mason jar."

She filmed herself pouring her glass of leftover wine into the mason jar – but you can use any type of airtight container – before screwing the lid on tightly.

"In desperate times, I have cleaned out a kombucha container and used that," Warner revealed. "Seal it tight and there you have it."

This storage method means the wine will stay fresher as it is exposed to less oxygen.

Warner said: "I swear by this, it will make your wine still taste fresh even a couple of days after you’ve opened it, whereas a day after I open a bottle of wine and put the cork back on, I can tell the difference."

As for whether or not you should store any leftover red wine in the fridge, Warner explained in the comments: "I keep reds in the fridge if I know I won’t finish it the next day, then pull out an hour b4 u drink to come to room temp!"

People quickly took to the comment section to thank Warner for her useful tips.

Another viewer also asked whether or not vacuum wine stoppers worked as an alternative method, to which Warner replied: "I use them in addition to this method! But this works better imo."

Another person simply wrote: "Leftover wine. I’ve read about it but never experienced it. I thought it was an urban myth!"
