Condensation can be a common problem in many households across the country, but one cleaning fan claimed there’s an easy-to-do solution that can put those issues to rest. Condensation can develop for a multitude of reasons, but if it’s left untreated, it can lead to mould growth, which could have some serious health consequences.

To combat any unwanted droplets on your window, cleaning TikToker Chantel Mila, more commonly known as Mama Mila, explained that all she uses is two ingredients to help clean her windows. In a recent video, she shared some of her most-loved home hacks for 2025. For condensation-free windows, all she uses is washing up liquid and a splash of peppermint oil.

How to prevent condensation on windows

Mould can develop if moisture is left on the windows. When water from condensation is trapped on surfaces, it provides the necessary moisture for mould spores to thrive.

Simply apply the washing up liquid and a few drops of peppermint oil onto a flannel or microfibre cloth, wiping all over the window. The dish soap helps to create a barrier on the glass, preventing water droplets from forming.

GLRE Glazing Refurbishment suggested that washing up liquid will work as a temporary solution.

Its experts explained that the hack works by creating a thin film that lowers surface tension and prevents water droplets from forming on a cold surface.

However GLRE warned: “Remember, it’s a temporary solution and may not completely stop condensation, especially on colder days. It’s best applied to the bottom of the windows where condensation tends to accumulate the most.”

While some experts agree that a small amount of washing up liquid can be used as a temporary solution to condensation, some have warned against it.

Emily Barron, a cleaning expert at Property Rescue, advised against the hack as it could do more harm than good.

She told The Metro: “The use of Fairy Liquid can actually worsen condensation problems and leave a soapy residue on surfaces. This can act as a barrier and trap moisture on surfaces instead of allowing it to evaporate.

“Surfaces may not be designed for long-term exposure to Fairy Liquid either, which means it could impact their overall condition and aesthetics.”
