Placing pillows in a washing machine can often make them clumpy or soaking wet, but there is an easy way to clean them without leaving a trail of water throughout your home. Pillows should be cleaned monthly when the weather gets warmer, as sweat can seep into the fabric, causing your bedding to quickly become smelly and even develop yellow stains.

However, you do not need to buy anything, as the experts at Tru Earth have shared a simple way to freshen up your pillows: a bathtub and a little bit of baking soda. They said, “Baking soda acts as a natural deodoriser, absorbing unwanted smells and leaving your pillows smelling fresh. Let the baking soda sit for at least 15 minutes before proceeding with the washing process."

It is incredibly important to ensure that sweat does not linger inside your pillows at this time of year, as this will increase the chances of bacteria and mould growth.

Baking soda is extremely absorbent, so it will help remove any moisture, smells, and oils stuck inside your pillow, making washing it easier.

Before you begin washing pillows, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on top of them and leave them to sit for a few hours or even overnight.

Brush the baking soda off into the bin or remove it from the fabric using a vacuum without an upholstery attachment.

Then, you can stick your pillows in a bathtub filled with cold water and a small amount of normal laundry detergent. If you prefer, you can use a basin or a sink instead.

After they have been submerged, gently move the pillows around in the water and press down on them to remove any dirt.

Squeeze the pillows thoroughly to remove any excess water, and then place them on a clean towel once you remove them from the tub.

Place the towel somewhere out of the way to let the pillows dry properly, and they will be completely deep-cleaned.

Air drying pillows indoors tends to be best, as the sun can often be too intense for certain delicate materials, causing them to fade and become dull grey.

However, most pillow types can be safely dried outdoors, but you should avoid exposing memory foam and synthetic pillows to any heat.

Once pillows are fully dry, give them a good shake to fluff them up before putting them back on your bed.

Your pillows should now be plump, fresh and clean without having to use a washing machine so you can enjoy a more comfortable night’s sleep.
