Cinnamon's popularity largely stems from its versatile culinary use, including its perceived health benefits. The popular spice is ancient as it is flavoursome and it adds a warm, slightly sweet flavor to both sweet and savory dishes. As summer approaches, gardening enthusiasts have been urged to reach for this popular spice that is said to work wonders for your garden.

So much so, when it comes to the benefits of the spice on plants, the options are widespread. So widespread in fact, you may even be reaching for cinnamon almost daily.

Gardening Know How states how cinnamon can also be used as “fungicide control”.

The site explained: “Damping off disease is a fungus-based problem that hits small seedlings just as they begin to grow.

“Cinnamon will help prevent this problem by killing the fungus.

“It also works with other fungal problems exhibited on older plants, such as slime mold and with deterring mushrooms in planters.”

Experts also add that cinnamon essential oil can act as a natural fungicide which helps to protect plants from fungal diseases.

That’s because cinnamon's active compounds, such as eugenol, have demonstrated antifungal properties in laboratory studies.

Cinnamon has been used in the garden to also address issues like grey mould, damping off, and other fungal infections.

However, cinnamon also comes with a note of caution as it can have a negative effect on some plants.

It's best to check beforehand whether or not it could harm your garden, warns Plantura.

The site also provides tips on using cinnamon when tackling mould and explains in depth the various ways in which the spice can be employed. You can find out more here.

Cinnamon has other, non-culinary applications, and can even be used on your vacuum cleaner to freshen up the smell around your home.
