Martin Lewis has issued an urgent travel warning for all travellers above 65 years. People above the age of 65 are at more risk of injury, illness, and having medical emergencies and getting the right holiday cover is a must, the expert warned.

According to Mr Lewis, travellers can end up paying much more than what is required if they fail to take out travel insurance in a timely manner. It is crucial for all travellers to disclose their pre-existing illnesses before making the bookings. The finance expert said: “If you currently have or have had a physical or mental health condition, you will usually need to declare it to the travel insurer.

“In some cases, it changes nothing, in others, it may hugely increase costs, or the provider may simply refuse to cover you (either entirely or for the specific condition).”

He cited an example of a traveller who saved £258 by just getting the right travel insurance. Mr Lewis wrote about Donald and said: "Donald, who emailed us earlier this year: 'Thank you Martin. Just saved £258 on travel insurance for a pre-existing medical issue. Went from £595 to £337. Keep up the great advice'."

The cost of the insurance varies from age to age and depending upon their specific illness, however, the finance guru shared that annual insurance prices range from £39 a year for anyone aged 66, and from £123 a year for those aged 76.

The finance expert suggested contacting different banks to compare prices and get the best deal. However, he shared some of the top picks of the banks.

For instance, Co-op Bank offers £15/mth (£18/mth from July), though currently it pays switchers a FREE £175. The maximum travel insurance age is 79. Other insurance includes mobile phone cover and UK & European breakdown cover for account holders.

Similarly, Virgin Money has £12.50/mth, and the maximum travel insurance age is 74. Other insurance includes family mobile phone cover and UK and European breakdown cover for account holders.

Nationwide offers £18/mth and has no age limit for the maximum travel insurance. Other insurance includes family mobile phone cover and UK and European breakdown cover for account holders.

Lastly, Halifax offers £19/mth with a maximum travel insurance age of 70. Other insurance includes mobile phone cover for account holders and family UK roadside breakdown cover.

Citing another example, Mr Lewis wrote: "Jackie, whose dad is 90, emailed us in March: 'My dad was quoted around £600 for European single-trip cover and almost £1,000 for annual multi-trip. After contacting loads of companies, he phoned his bank, Nationwide, who said if he upgraded his account to the packaged account (£216 a year), they would cover him on an annual multi-trip basis for £100 extra'."
