Whether it’s underarm discolouration or stubborn build-up around collars, unsightly marks often feel impossible to remove with regular laundry cycles. Many turn to harsh chemicals or expensive detergents, but there’s a much gentler, affordable option hiding in your kitchen cupboard.

Cleaning experts at Shark Clean explain that for tackling sweat stains, you can "make a paste from bicarbonate of soda and water". This simple combination works wonders on even the toughest yellow marks; but how do you apply the solution correctly?

The miracle mixture (baking soda and water) is first blended into a paste and brushed directly onto the stained areas.

Once applied, let the mixture sit for at least 20 minutes, or leave it on overnight for deeply embedded stains.

After treatment, rinse thoroughly with warm water, then wash as normal as part of your usual laundry cycle.

For stubborn patches, the process may need to be repeated, but the results are worth the effort.

If your spring wardrobe is also falling victim to sunscreen stains, there’s a solution for that, too.

The cleaning experts recommend soaking garments in hot water mixed with regular washing detergent or white vinegar, depending on what you have to hand.

"Fill a sink or bowl with hot water and washing powder," they suggest, using the manufacturer’s quantities or substituting vinegar for an extra boost.

Stubborn sun cream marks should be treated directly with an oxygen-based remover or the same trusty baking soda and water paste. Always rinse thoroughly and wash as normal for the best results.

While these DIY techniques may sound simple, they’ve proven incredibly effective for reviving clothes that once seemed ruined.

By combining common household ingredients with a bit of patience, you can bring life back to whites without the need for harsh bleaches.

For eco-conscious households, these methods are not only budget-friendly but also reduce reliance on strong chemicals.

As the cleaning experts say, "repeat the process as necessary" — a little persistence goes a long way. So next time you reach for the stain remover, start with what’s already in your cupboard.
