Before he was cast as James Bond, Daniel Craig had supporting roles in Hollywood movies like Elizabeth and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

But did you know he starred in a 1999 film about the trenches of World War 1?

The little-known movie features the future 007 co-starring with Paul Nicholls, as they lead a group of young British Tommies in the 48 hours before 1916’s Battle of the Somme. The bloody affair resulted in an estimated one million casualties and over 300,000 fatalities.

The war film also features Julian Rhind-Tutt, Danny Dyer, James D’Arcy, plus pre-fame Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw. The latter would famously go on to play Q opposite Craig in the last three Bond movies.

According to Movie Web, The Trench was also Tom Hardy’s first big screen role, in which he was an uncredited soldier “carrying a rifle in two back-to-back scenes; just another face in a sea of soldiers”. But just five years later, he would co-star in Layer Cake opposite Craig before both shot to international stardom.

The Trench is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
