An unexpected ingredient will "boost" the flavour of your chilli con carne, according to a number of cooks. Chilli con carne is a staple in many British homes and can be put together very easily. Normally, all you need is ground beef, beans, a tin of chopped tomatoes and some seasonings, as well as whatever vegetables you want to put in there. However, there is an extra ingredient you can add to improve the flavour of your chilli.

According to one Reddit user, a splash of orange juice "boosts" the flavour of chilli. Orange juice is an acid, which are recommended for chilli to bring out its intense flavours. For many, this comes in the form of a squeeze of lemon or some vinegar. However, orange juice might be the way to take your chilli from a good dish to a great dish. That is what is suggested by the home cooks at 12 Tomatoes.

Their recipe for chilli includes orange juice to amp up the flavour. "Some acid also helps and some freshly squeezed orange juice does all that and more in this Orange Chilli," they say.

"Fresh squeezed orange juice is the only way to go for this recipe. Bottled orange juice simply won’t give us the same rich flavor."

Their recipe is made up of 2 teaspoons canola oil, 1 ½ lbs ground beef, 1 white onion diced, 1 orange bell pepper diced, 4 garlic cloves minced, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 2 teaspoons ground cumin, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, salt and pepper to taste, 1 (15 oz) can crushed tomatoes, 3 (15 oz) cans kidney beans, drained, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 cup vegetable or beef broth, zest of 2 Valencia oranges, plus 3 tablespoons juice.

To start this recipe, heat the oil and add the beef, cooking it for two minutes. Then, reduce heat to medium and cook for 6-8 more minutes or until meat is no longer pink. After that, add the onion and pepper to the pot and cook for 8 minutes, followed by the garlic, tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne, salt and pepper, cooking for an additional minute.

The remaining ingredients should then be added and stirred well. Simply cover it and let it simmer after that for between 20 and 30 minutes. They suggest then topping it with things like cheese and sour cream.

Reddit users shared their tips for making the best chilli and many suggestions for additional ingredients were put forward. One person said: "MSG and finely diced mushroom that you saute until mahogany brown."

Another person shared: "Cumin and/or curry powder." A third wrote: "I'd consider adding a few splashes of Worcestershire in the simmering phase. Maybe even a touch of MSG directly. Make sure to adjust your salt after this, so you don't end up with a salty mess."
