Garden enthusiasts can now keep their birdbaths sparkling clean and algae-free with a simple and cost-effective trick – just by using a 1p coin. This clever hack not only keeps the water inviting for our feathered friends but also adds a charming touch to any garden space.

Dirt and grime can quickly accumulate in birdbaths, making them less appealing to birds and wildlife watchers alike. However, the solution to maintaining a pristine birdbath is surprisingly affordable and easy to implement.

By placing a single copper 1p coin in the centre of the birdbath, you can significantly slow down the growth of algae. Copper acts as an algicide, ensuring that the water remains clear and clean for much longer periods.

To start, give your birdbath a good scrub with soapy water. After it's clean, pop in the copper coin to keep algae at bay.

Sam Stevens, a garden design expert from Pergolux UK, encourages gardeners to prepare their outdoor spaces for the upcoming spring season: "Spring is on its way, and a lot of people will be looking at their gardens and getting them ready for brighter and longer days ahead."

He also highlights that keeping a garden tidy doesn't have to break the bank: "Cleaning the garden doesn't have to be an expensive job at all. We all love a cheap and cheerful hack and the good news is that there are plenty of items you'll already have in your home that can be used in the garden."

From buffing away stains to achieving a streak-free finish on glass or tackling rust, Stevens assures that household items can serve multiple purposes in the garden.

Adding to the conversation, Lucy Taylor, a bird specialist from Vine House Farm, advises: "Clean bird baths daily and allow them to air dry before refilling.

"The drying process helps ensure that the Trichomonosis parasite does not survive."
