Best place to keep peace lilies flowering, according to a gardener

Peace lily houseplants, known for their stunning foliage and white blooms, are quite the undemanding addition to indoor gardening. With the right amount of TLC and ideal conditions, these plants can present their elegant flowers all year round, with each bloom gracing the room for well over four weeks.

Crucial to their blooming potential is their placement, due to their dependency on appropriate light levels. This very topic was raised by Joanne Millward in a post on the Gardening UK Facebook group, where she expressed her newfound admiration for the peace lily: “Fell in love with the peace lily after seeing some posts on them. Sent it to my husband, and he got me one. I love it.”

She sought advice on optimal care and positioning, asking: “Now I’m just after some advice on how to look after it and the best place to sit her.”

Fellow green-fingered members chimed in, suggesting that while bright light is necessary for peace lilies, direct sunshine is a no-no.

Sue Merry recommended a careful watering routine: “Lots of light but not direct sunlight, only water when soil becomes dryish. I water mine once a week. Water from the bottom, not the top.”

Meanwhile, Helen Davies addressed the plant’s hydration habits: “Peace lilies are very thirsty. Water as soon as you see the leaves lower, but ideally not droop, as that creates stress for the plant.”

As for the spot to station the plant, she advised, “They like a spot that is sunny. However, the best spot is one where they flower, for me it's in the hallway by the front door.”

Coral Smith shared a personal testament to the hardiness of peace lilies, mentioning her own, which has thrived for years: "Mine is years old and I keep it just inside the front door, which is patterned glass. We have four flowers at the moment, but it never stops flowering in this spot.”

For those keen on nurturing peace lilies near their entrance, it's crucial to check for drafts that could harm the plant.

While peace lilies can survive in low-light conditions, they’re unlikely to produce many flowers, if any.

Optimal growth is achieved in bright, filtered, indirect sunlight. In addition to avoiding drafts, direct sunlight should also be avoided as it can scorch the leaves of a peace lily.
