President Donald Trump is "very worried about nuclear war", according to American journalist Melinda Crane, who made the comment during her appearance on DW News' The International Talk Show.

"If Putin can kind of get to him on that level, Putin may be back in favour", Crane added. John Fairlamb, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, penned a column for The Hill, stating:

"New START is the only U.S.-Russia nuclear weapons treaty still in effect and when it expires, there will be no limits on Russian strategic systems and no inspection regime to verify what types and numbers of strategic systems the Russians are deploying." The news emerges as a blast map shows what happens if Russia nukes UK city in Putin puppet's latest threat.

On Monday, President Putin proposed to extend the treaty for one year if the U.S. agreed to reciprocate.

"The president is aware of this offer extended by President Putin, and I'll let him comment on it later. I think it sounds pretty good, but he wants to make some comments on that himself," spokesperson Karoline Leavitt informed reporters, reports the Express US.

"Russia is prepared to continue adhering to the central quantitative limitations of the New START Treaty for one year after February 5, 2026," when it expires, Putin declared, adding that Moscow will later decide on continuing restrictions depending on the situation.

The New START Treaty, first implemented in 2011, caps the number of strategic nuclear warheads that Moscow and Washington can deploy at 1,550 each.

The treaty also restricts the number of launchers and nuclear-capable heavy bombers to 800 and establishes a mutual inspection and notification regime.

President Trump has expressed his ambition for denuclearisation, stating it's "a big aim.

"Russia's willing to do it, and I think China is going to be willing to do it too."

However, just two days later, China declined to enter into nuclear arms control negotiations.

This week, President Trump demonstrated a change in his stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. After meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, he stated on Tuesday that he believes Ukraine can win the war and reclaim all lost territory.

These comments mark a departure from his previous position that Zelensky "doesn't have the cards", suggesting that time is not on Ukraine's side and that Russia is winning the war.

He also encouraged Zelensky to make territorial concessions to Russia to broker a deal that would conclude the four year old conflict.
