President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to reintroduce the death penalty in Washington, D. C.
The presidential directive was issued to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, instructing them to fully implement capital punishment in the city.
Trump, while signing the order, reiterated his claim that crime rates have plummeted since the deployment of the National Guard in the capital. He stated that there had not been a single murder in four weeks, a claim yet to be verified. The news comes as Trump sends veiled threat to Putin that could completely choke his war machine.
"This is a very safe city now", Trump declared.
He also mentioned that female staff at the White House have expressed their gratitude to him for enhancing the city's safety, reports the Express US.
"Capital punishment for the capital city", he quipped.
The attorney general confirmed that the administration is seeking to enforce the death penalty not just in the capital, but nationwide.
Last month, Trump announced his intention to restore capital punishment in Washington, D. C., during a Cabinet meeting focused on his crackdown on crime in the nation's capital.
"If somebody kills somebody in the capital, Washington, D.C., we're going to be seeking the death penalty," he clarified.
"And that's a very strong preventative. And everybody that's heard it agrees with it."
Capital punishment has been outlawed in D. C. since 1981, when the D. C. Council voted for its repeal. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the last execution in the district took place in 1957.
Trump also put pen to paper on an executive order stating that a proposed agreement to bring TikTok under U.S. ownership addresses key security concerns. He mentioned that China's Xi has given the green light to the proposed deal which would place TikTok under U.S. ownership.
