“If you really want to travel securely, go for something ordinary, or even a little worn. It doesn’t draw attention and it doesn’t advertise what might be inside.”

It isn’t just about what your case looks like, though. Securing it properly matters too, with the travel expert noting that even a basic padlock can make a genuine difference, as opportunistic thieves are less likely to bother with a bag that presents any kind of obstacle.

While they urge people to avoid a bold suitcase, they say that it doesn’t mean you need to ditch all personal touches. Small ribbons, stickers, or discreet markers can help you spot your bag quickly at baggage claim, but without turning it into a neon sign for thieves.

Andrea said: "It’s about balance. You want to recognise it instantly without making it look like treasure on wheels.

Another way to protect your belongings is to add a tracker to it. You can buy many devices which simply slip into your case, and if it does go missing, or gets stolen, you can see where it is. "If a bag does go astray, a tracker can point you and the airline in the right direction, and it makes insurance claims much easier,” Andrea pointed out.

Unfortunately, the threat isn’t limited to airports, she revealed. In fact, railway stations are increasingly targeted, with thefts from trains in the UK up by nearly 37 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year.

British Transport Police recorded 1,915 stolen suitcases in 2024, up from 1,398 in 2023. Busy hubs like King’s Cross, Paddington, and Euston are particular hotspots.

Beyond theft prevention, insurance should never be ignored. Double-check that your policy covers belongings outside the home, or consider topping up with travel insurance that includes baggage protection. “Losing a suitcase is stressful, but the sting is far worse if you’re left footing the bill,” the expert said.

Concluding their advice, they urge people to report thefts straight away, as quick action not only improves your chances of recovering belongings, but also makes the insurance process smoother. Before leaving for the airport, take a few pictures of how your suitcase looks to help those searching with you identify it.
