A shocking case of child abuse has come to light as Jorden Borders, 35, a mother from Minnesota, was found guilty on all 11 charges brought against her in June.

According to the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, the charges included one count of attempted murder, three counts of child torture, three counts of stalking, and four counts of theft by false representation.

On Thursday, Crow Wing County Judge Patricia Aanes sentenced Borders to nearly 40 years in state prison, where the conditions are harsh.

In a statement, Attorney General Keith Ellison said: "Borders' crimes are some of the most heinous and agonising I have seen in my time as Attorney General. I am praying for her children's recovery from the suffering and trauma they endured."

The statement further detailed: "Borders' acts included, but were not limited to, engaging in medical child abuse by performing specific acts against her children that led to them presenting with false medical conditions to their medical providers."

"This included Borders forcibly withdrawing blood from her then nine-year-old child before his doctor was administered with a syringe.

"The mother also extracted blood from her children using various other catheters. These include a PICC line, which is inserted into smaller veins, and a central line, which is inserted into major arteries, such as those in the chest or neck."

The press release disclosed that Borders would escort the youngster to medical appointments and hospitals, where doctors uncovered the child's perilously low haemoglobin levels.

In May 2022, police launched an investigation into Borders after staff at a children's hospital spotted the recurring problem with the child's haemoglobin and contacted authorities.

A search warrant was carried out at the Borders home on Industrial Road in the small town of Crosslake, situated 150 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

This investigation resulted in Borders' arrest in November 2022.

A probable cause affidavit detailed the blood extraction plot: "Child 2 who is nine years old was seen at the Childrens hospital with the concern of his hemoglobin numbers dropping. Child 2 was monitored with the only explanation of his numbers dropping is that someone was removing blood from his body."

Strange acts

The youngsters also disclosed that Borders ordered them to flush the blood down the toilet and instructed them to remain silent about it.

"Child 2 said he got really sick and had to go to the hospital," and mentioned that the blood being taken from him made "his body feel 'sick-sleepy.'".

Borders was also found to have compelled her children to wear boots, casts, and neck braces despite no identified fractures or diagnosed injuries, as she self-diagnosed them with brittle bone disease.

One of the children remained in a cast for over two years. According to the press release, "Another child stated that Borders would instruct the child to vomit at the doctor even though he didn't want to, and to cough as if he had asthma, at which time asthma medication was prescribed.

"The defendant also forced one of the children to wear unprescribed hearing amplifiers, which led to the child developing a boil on the back of her ear."

Thrashed until they bled

Beyond the shocking medical mistreatment, all three youngsters testified that Borders beat them with charging leads, belts, and spoons.

In a harrowing disclosure, one child revealed they were thrashed with a cord until they bled.

The mum also made them stand outdoors in freezing conditions without clothing until their bodies felt as though they were burning, withheld food from them, and regularly threatened to kill them, the children reported.

According to the AG's office, Borders was found guilty of defrauding Minnesota's Medicaid programme out of $18,000 by inventing symptoms for one of her children and then claiming to serve as the child's personal care assistant.

Borders and her husband agreed to surrender their parental rights during a December 2022 court hearing.
