Piers Morgan has taken a brutal swipe at Meghan Markle in a grueling TV interview on BBC Newsnight. On Thursday (July 31), the broadcaster made an appearance on the weekly news show where he lifted the lid on the success he’s had since he left ITV to move over to YouTube.
Morning TV viewers will remember the Uncensored host, 60, sensationally left Good Morning Britain back in 2021 following his criticism of Oprah’s interview with the Suits star and Prince Harry. Since then, Piers worked on TalkTV for a brief stint before he went solo with his own show on YouTube February 2024. It appears as though YouTube is on the rise after a recent study by Ofcom showed that the social media platform has officially overtaken several TV channels, including his old employer ITV.
Currently, broadcasting giant BBC is still leading the race but the study reveals one in five young viewers are turning to the video sharing platform first when turning on their smart TVs.
Generation Alpha – those ages between four and 15 – are now turning to YouTube first while people over 55 are now watching nearly twice as much YouTube as they did two years ago.
After the surprising survey was released, broadcaster Adam Fleming welcomed Piers onto the evening show to get his thoughts on the changing media landscape.
When he was asked how he went from Good Morning Britain, Piers made sure to thank Meghan Markle for the backlash he received back in 2021.
He chuckled: “Well the simple answer would be Meghan Markle because without her contribution I wouldn’t have left Good Morning Britain and then become a free agent.
“I began to notice with my own children how they were consuming content. So, I’ve got three boys, 32, 28, and 24, and a 13-year-old daughter and none of them watched regular television.
“I hate to tell you this because we’re doing this in a conventional television way, but they won’t be watching like this. They will watch clips on social media, be it on X, or Facebook, or TikTok, or Instagram, but they won’t sit and watch this at 10.30pm at night.”
Touching on the explosive survey by the UK watchdog, Piers added: “Now we have this new survey that’s come out from Ofcom which makes it crystal clear that not only is YouTube the future, but that even the great, mighty, BBC – which I’m a big fan of which is why I'm appearing on it now – even the BBC has YouTube breathing down its neck.
“And honestly, in about five years time, YouTube will be number one by a mile.” When Piers was asked what the results of this survey could mean for his old employers at ITV, he simply replied: "That's what happens when you get rid of people like me and I go to YouTube. Thank you, Meghan."
He went on to tease that ITV "can't afford me anymore" as he urged investors to give him a call. It comes after Piers blocked his former Good Morning Britain co-star Narinder Kaur on X.
Using the AI feature Grok, she found out "the most famous person to have blocked her is Piers Morgan". This didn't seem to bother Narinder as she snapped back in a post online: "Ahh... well... he's irrelevant."
