As tensions rise in hotspots like Barcelona, Venice and Mallorca, where locals are staging protests, blocking beaches, and calling for stricter tourist limits, you might be looking for somewhere else to visit. There are plenty of places in Europe for you to enjoy a break away from the crowds, and an expert has shared one perfect swap. 

Instead of visiting Dubrovnik in Croatia, which often becomes busy with tourists, there’s another location that looks exactly the same but has fewer tourists. By analysing flight search trends, affordability, social media buzz, and signs of overtourism or protest activity, new research has uncovered this perfect swap.

Travel expert Yasmin Peskel from Blue Cruise believes it’s still possible to enjoy Europe’s best summer spots, but without the backlash. 

“We’re not saying don’t travel, we’re saying travel smarter,” she says. “The backlash we’re seeing isn’t anti-tourist, it’s anti-overcrowding. 

“Locals are simply asking for balance. Our study helps travellers discover incredible destinations that offer the same vibes; beaches, culture and nightlife, without the tension or burnout, for them or the communities they visit.”

You should visit Kotor in Montenegro instead of Dubrovnik, she suggests. These two are natural twins, medieval walled cities on the Adriatic, dramatic backdrops, and cruise ship destinations. 

Dubrovnik is a poster child for overtourism, while Kotor offers a quieter but equally stunning experience, Yasmin says.

One person who visited Kotor Old Town says: “Walking through the beautiful streets of the old town is calming and very beautiful experience. 

“When you get tired of seeing the old architecture you can relax in one of the nice restaurants for a coffee and pastry. Totally lovely experience!”
