The former BBC Radio 1 DJ and Live Aid presenter, Andy Kershaw, has sadly died aged 66 following a battle with cancer, his family has confirmed. It was announced in January this year that he had been diagnosed with cancer and was unable to walk. His diagnosis was confirmed after doctors discovered tumours on his spine last summer, with his friend Peter Everett posting on Facebook at the time that the presenter had a "difficult time" recently, in a bid to explain why there had been no new episode of The Andy Kershaw Show since June 2025.

He wrote: "Last August, he was diagnosed with cancer, mainly affecting his spine and making him unable to walk. Since then, he has been undergoing treatment, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, physiotherapy and a lot of scans and painkillers." His friend had also shared a statement that came directly from Andy, showing him in "good spirits".

He was a beloved BBC star and was a recognised voice on Radio 1 for 15 years from 1985, before going on to report for Radio 4 on both music and news.

In 1985, he was one of the presenters on BBC for Live Aid, which had been organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. Kershaw's sister, Liz Kershaw, also worked at the BBC during his time there, from 1987 to 1992. When he first joined BBC Radio 1, he was viewed by many listeners as a potential successor to DJ John Peel. However, by 2000, his weekly late-night Radio 1 show was axed as part of a schedule overhaul.
