Fans of The Testaments have been left baffled by a burning question surrounding the character of Daisy.
The Testaments continues to attract a growing audience, with episode four landing on screens this week following its three-episode debut on Disney+ and Hulu, reports the Mirror.
The series acts as a follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale, shining a spotlight on the next generation of women in Gilead through the perspectives of Commander's daughter Agnes MacKenzie (played by Chase Infiniti) and Pearl Girl Daisy (Lucy Halliday).
While the drama is based on Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel The Testaments, the show's producers have been compelled to take certain creative liberties, causing the television adaptation to depart from the original source material.
Some of the most significant alterations centre around Daisy and her family background, prompting viewers to raise numerous questions regarding her true identity and parentage.
Here's a breakdown of both the show and the novel for answers regarding Daisy's parents.
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from The Testaments TV show and novel by Margaret Atwood
Daisy is Holly/Nichole in The Testaments novel and her parents are June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and former Guardian and Commander Nick Blaine (Max Minghella).
She was conceived during June's time as a Handmaid in Gilead at the behest of Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).
The short answer is that we don't know. The Daisy featured in the TV series is not the same Daisy as portrayed in the books, owing to differing timelines.
There is a 15-year time-jump between The Handmaid's Tale novel and its sequel book.
However, in the TV series, there is a gap of only four years, meaning that Holly/Nichole remains a young child of approximately five years old.
Showrunner Bruce Miller recently told The Hollywood Reporter: "I didn't want to make any changes at all, but I felt like I wanted to have Daisy and Agnes physically together, and not tell their stories 15 years apart as they do in the book.
"So it was very hard and I didn't want to do it, but Daisy is not Nichole/Holly.
"Holly exists in the series and she's a child - you see her boots in one scene and there are little hints that she's out there. But I tried to change as little else as I could."
Nevertheless, June informs Daisy in the TV series that Gilead is searching for her and believes she "belongs" to them, following the murder of Daisy's adoptive parents Neil (Jimi Shlag) and Melanie (Kerri Smith) by agents of the regime.
This suggests that Daisy was amongst the children rescued during the Angel's Flight in season three, when June organised an aircraft to save numerous children from the oppressive regime.
While Daisy's biological parents remain unknown, given her age, she was most likely born prior to Gilead's establishment.
Much like Hannah/Agnes, Daisy may well have been forcibly removed from her biological parents by Gilead.
This storyline could well be revisited further down the line, given that showrunner Miller has ambitions to produce multiple seasons of The Testaments, mirroring his approach with The Handmaid's Tale.
The Testaments airs weekly on Hulu and Disney+ on Wednesdays
