Throughout her career as a songwriter and talented harpist, she won BAFTAs, Emmy Awards and Grammys for her chart-topping music. The band also scooped up an Ivor Novello Award and a Billboard Music Award.

Now, her sister has shared his heartache online with a touching post on X - formerly known as Twitter. She penned: "It is with a deep and terrible sadness that I must announce the death of my beloved sister, Máire. Not only was she my sister, she was a dear and close friend. I would ask for privacy at the time. Enya."

Moya launched her music career in 1970 and released her first album in 1992. Throughout her lifetime, she sold 25million records worldwide. As a musician, she recorded soundtracks for several hit films, including the 1997 film Titanic, To End all Wars and King Arthur.

She is survived by her husband, Tim Jarvis, and their two children, Aisling and Paul. Although Enya turned off comments on her tribute post, fans flocked to social media to share their fond memories and sympathise with the family.

One user penned: "So sad to hear of the death of Moya Brennan, the ethereal voice of Clannad. I saw her & the band many, many times over the years, and they were always incredible (their most successful song, The Theme from Harry's Game, never failed to give me goosebumps.)"

Another echoed: "Deeply saddened at the passing of Moya Brennan - an iconic Irish voice. Along with her Clannad bandmates, Moya brought Irish folk music to the international stage. Deepest sympathies to Moya's family and friends at this difficult time."

Somebody else said: "Had the greatest honour playing with Moya at the national concert hall in Dublin, a lady through and through and a national treasure. RIP the great Moya Brennan."

Her death comes three years after Clannad performed their farewell concert in Dublin back in 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their debut album.
