Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne was slapped with a court fine after he was caught speeding in London and breaking one of the city's 20mph zones. The actor, who won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2016 for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, was snapped by a speed camera when he was driving at 28mph on the A4 towards West Kensington just before 11am.

The incident took place last October and he admitted being the driver, but he submitted the form too late to avoid a prosecution. Eddie was one of 450 motorists to be prosecuted by the Met last week for speeding at 20mph zones, resulting in court fines between £40 and the maximum £1,000 penalty.

According to court papers, the Metropolitan Police submitted evidence including an image of the star's speeding Audi, and that the star had received a notice of intended prosecution six days after the offence.

The court records showed that Eddie responded on March 1 and submitted the form to the police, but officials said his form had not arrived in time to avoid a court case.

A police official stated: "Due to the late response to notice of intended prosecution, this case does not qualify for an out of court disposal and has therefore been referred to the prosecutions team for a single justice procedure notice to be issued."

The actor pleaded guilty to the offence, and was sentenced on April 8, at a private court hearing to a £1,000 fine. He was also ordered to pay £130 in costs and a £400 victim surcharge. On top of that, he received three penalty points on his licence.

In 2020, Kensington and Chelsea Council announced a borough-wide 20mph speed limit as part of Covid-19 response Active Travel Plan. They mentioned in a statement: "Collisions at 30mph are much more likely to result in serious injury, particularly to pedestrians, cyclists and motor cyclists, than collisions at 20mph.

"20mph limits alone will not be sufficient to meet the needs of active travel, but in association with other measures, reducing the speed limit can provide a more attractive and safer environment for walking and cycling."

Harry Potter star Emma Watson was also caught speeding in 2024 and she has been banned from driving for six months. The actress, 35, attended High Wycombe Magistrates' Court as she admitted to speeding on Banbury Road, Oxford after going 38mph in 30mph zone. She had been driving a £30k Audi after she was caught on a speeding camera in July last year.
