The first report from the inquiry into the horrific Southport murders is being released today, April 13. The Southport Inquiry ran for nine weeks last autumn, with the aim of examining the timeline of killer Axel Rudakubana's history and his interaction with public bodies. It also aimed at establishing and examining the potential failure which allowed the killer to carry out "one of the most egregious crimes in our country’s history”, as the Southport killings have been described.
Rudakubana, referred to as "AR" during the inquiry proceedings, was 17 when he killed Bebe King, six, Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, during his knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in July 2024. Rudakubana, who was in January 2025 sentenced to serve a minimum of 52 years, also attempted to murder 10 other people. Chair of the inquiry, retired High Court judge Sir Adrian Fulford, told the proceedings in November that the obligation was to provide answers to victims and their families. He said: "Our principal responsibility lies with them, to provide the best possible explanation as to why and how this terrible event occurred and to be brave about suggesting the changes that should be made to prevent, if we can, a repetition."
