Asha Bhosle, the legendary Bollywood singer who became a cultural icon, has died at the age of 92, her son has confirmed. The queen of Indian playback singing died in Mumbai on Sunday, having been admitted to hospital after suffering a heart attack. Just hours before the news of her death, the singer's granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, penned a heartfelt message on Instagram. It read: "My grandmother, Asha Bhosle due to extreme exhaustion and suffering a chest infection has been admitted to hospital and we request you to value our privacy. Treatment is ongoing and hopefully everything will be well and we shall update you positively."

Tributes have since poured in from heartbroken fans following the news, as one wrote, "Asha Bhosle’s voice was a gift that crossed generations. She brought soul, elegance, and emotion into every song. Prayers and deepest condolences to her family, to those in Bollywood who were near to her, and to all her admirers around the world. Legends do not die; they remain alive in their art."

Another commented, "Her voice defined generations, spanning classical, pop music, ghazals and Bollywood hits." A third penned: "One of the rare voices that could do classical, cabaret, pop, and still sound effortless."

With a career spanning over eight decades having sung over 12,000 songs, her death marks the end of an era in Bollywood music. Bhosle's distinctive voice breathed life into countless film songs as actors lip-synced to her unforgettable tracks.

Her pervasive presence in Bollywood earned her the 1997 hit Cornershop tribute Brimful of Asha, and she was also known internationally for a collaboration with British musician Boy George.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called her "one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known." In a post on X, he said her "extraordinary musical journey" enriched the nation's cultural heritage and touched "countless hearts across the world".

Actor and politician Hema Malini voiced her grief, saying the singer's death "is especially hard for me as I have an emotional connect with Ashaji - she has made many of my songs so popular with her unique voice and style".

Composer Shankar Mahadevan said "every Indian is heartbroken today", adding that her music would "never perish as long as humanity exists" and that she would "live forever, with her incredible voice echoing across the world".

Boshle was born on September 8, 1933 in Goar, Maharashtra, from the renowned Mangeshkar family. Her career soared in the 50s through to the 70s, including hits like Aaiye Meherbaan (1958), Parde Mein Rehne Do (1968) and Dum Maro Dum (1971).

At 16, she eloped with her neighbour, Ganpatrao Bhosle, leading to a tumultuous marriage and separation. She left her husband in 1960 as a single mother of three children.

Boshle later remarried Indian music director and singer, Rahul Dev Burman, in 1980 and they remained together until his death in 1994.

She faced constant comparisons with her sister, Lata Mangeshkar, who too was a Bollywood icon. Lata died in 2022 aged 92.

"For me, music is my breath, external. I have spent my life with this thought. I have given a lot to music. I feel good I've come out of difficult times. Many times I felt I would not be able to survive, but I did," Bhosle said in 2023.

In one of her final recordings, she collaborated with the British virtual band Gorillaz on their 2026 album The Mountain.
