Five things about The Other Bennet Sister's Ella Bruccoleri

The Other Bennet Sister is set to conclude on the BBC this weekend, leaving fans eagerly searching for something to fill the gap.

The BBC period drama The Other Bennet Sister has captivated viewers since its debut last month, reports the Mirror.

The series is based on Janice Hadlow's 2020 novel of the same name and centres on Mary Bennet (played by Ella Bruccoleri), the most neglected Bennet sibling from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

In keeping with Austen's romantic and witty literary style, the 10-part limited series follows Mary as she forges her own path in the world, discovering herself and finding happiness on her own terms, free from the restrictive boundaries of her rural upbringing.

With the BBC broadcasting the final two episodes this weekend — the complete boxset has already been available on BBC iPlayer for a fortnight for those who prefer to binge-watch — here are five other charming period dramas for you to savour.

Bridgerton

Netflix's lavish period drama is ideal for those wishing to immerse themselves in Regency-era glamour with a generous helping of passion.

Adapted from American author Julia Quinn's Bridgerton novel series, each season delivers a romance centred on a different member of the aristocratic family.

Furthermore, there are various romance tropes to satisfy all tastes, including fake courtship to lovers, enemies to lovers and friends to lovers.

Pride and Prejudice (1995)

Widely regarded as the definitive screen adaptation of Austen's cherished novel, the 1995 rendition of Pride and Prejudice comprises six magnificent hours of Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle) and Mr Darcy's (Colin Firth) captivating love story.

Standout performances abound throughout, including Julia Sawalha as Lydia, Alison Steadman as Mrs Bennet and Mr Darcy's famously dripping wet shirt, the latter of which has since become an absolute staple of any self-respecting period drama.

For devotees of The Other Bennet Sister, actress Lucy Briers — who portrays Hill in the programme — can also be spotted in her role as Mary Bennet.

Miss Austen

Another Austen-inspired production, bearing similarities to The Other Bennet Sister, is the BBC's adaptation of Gill Hornby's 2020 novel Miss Austen.

The novel draws upon historical events and examines why Austen's elder sister Cassandra (Keeley Hawes) destroyed thousands of her sibling's letters.

The moving miniseries, firmly grounded in reality, explores the sisters' lives as they weathered hardship and pursued romance.

Miss Austen wholeheartedly captures the spirit of an Austen tale and has proven so enormously popular that a second series has been commissioned.

North and South (2004)

Elizabeth Gaskell's period drama North and South is frequently overshadowed by the enduring love for Austen, yet the 2004 adaptation is a raw, emotionally charged watch with a captivating romance at its heart.

Richard Armitage's Mr Thornton is an irresistibly dashing hero, while Daniela Denby-Ashe is magnificent as the spirited heroine in this tale set against the turbulent backdrop of the industrial revolution.

Persuasion (2007)

Finally, ITV's 2007 adaptation of Austen's last novel Persuasion is absolutely unmissable.

It's a more reflective affair, yet equally heart-warming, as Anne Elliot (Sally Hawkins) reignites her romance with Captain Wentworth (Rupert Penry-Jones), years after she was convinced to call off their engagement.

Expect breathtaking vistas of Bath and some genuinely moving performances from the leading cast.
