"Worse than that, you're sending the King to place nice with him." Responding to the question, the Labour minister replied: We have a long, strong, deep, standing partnership, and that continues. But we do have disagreements on particular issues. We had a disagreement on Greenland, we had a disagreement on the start of this conflict, and the Prime Minister has been clear. Cutting, in Guru-Murthy, said: "Trump has been very offensive about British forces and the Prime Minister."
In reply, Cooper stated there has been some “rhetoric that’s completely wrong” before saying the Government will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, which she claimed is all about “longstanding relationships” between nations.
However, a baffled Guru-Murthy said: “Aren't you putting the King in an awkward position?" His question comes ahead of King Charles and Queen Camilla meeting Trump later this month for a state visit.
She clapped back: “It’s about the 250th anniversary, and that is important,” before noting, “it’s important we should mark that anniversary.”
Furious viewers were quick to comment on the interview, with one writing on X: “Painful. Just say the relationship is strained at the moment, and maybe given the geopolitics of the time, now isn’t the best time for a visit, and it will be reviewed and, if need be, cancelled to a better time.”
Another added: “Pathetic answers! Will never vote Labour again.” A third added: “A generation of useless politicians who are not up to the moment.” A fourth said: “Well challenged! Disgraceful responses.”
Despite the backlash, another viewer said: “Send a message and cancel the trip.” Someone else penned: “Someone is not reading the room…Or is reading the room but unable to act upon what she sees...Is she under orders to deny the obvious?”
